Can a child be diagnosed with bipolar disorder? Most of what I’ve read says bipolar disorder develops in adults.
Although bipolar disorder usually affects adults, there is substantial evidence that it also can occur in children. Making a diagnosis of bipolar disorder in children may be more difficult because its symptoms may be different in children and adolescents than in adults. In addition, some symptoms of bipolar disorder may be initially mistaken as normal mood swings or other psychiatric disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or conduct disorder.
Is there a connection between bipolar disorder and alcoholism?
Bipolar disorder and alcoholism frequently occur together. In some cases, bipolar disorder clearly develops before alcoholism. Bipolar disorder may increase the risk of alcoholism or other forms of substance abuse. It’s not clear why this occurs. But it may have a genetic component.
When bipolar disorder and alcoholism occur together, each can worsen the symptoms and severity of the other. Alcohol or other substance abuse can also complicate treatment efforts for bipolar disorder, and vice versa.
Trichotillomania sufferers lose hair, pulling out handfuls of it as a result of an emotionally triggered response to negative feelings of stress, anxiety, fear, anger, and other states of negativity. However, those who have this condition suffer more than the loss of hair - pulling out hair is a compulsory behavior that is difficult to gain control over, so many have also suffered feelings of self defeat and weakness. This can actually feed into the self destructive pattern of behavior and make things far worse.
This means of losing hair, pulling out fistfuls of one’s own hair, can outwardly seem more than very strange to others, so many sufferers of this condition tend to be very secretive, which can add to the sense of shame that is felt by those with trichotillomania, which again can make the condition worse, feeding more negativity into the whole vicious cycle of it all. Obviously, this can be torturous, and so these sufferers seek help through whatever means available.
